Staples Plans To Gets Back To Mobile Phone Business

NEW YORK -- With the rising popularity of mobile computing among small businesses, No. 1 U.S. office-supplies retailer Staples Inc. is getting back to the mobile-phone businesses after exiting it several years ago, Chief Financial Officer John Mahoney said in an interview. The company plans to start selling mobile phones, air cards, and wireless plans through several hundred stores this year after a test run in fewer than 100 stores last year, he told MarketWatch. The company also will introduce a tablet computer lineup, featuring brands including BlackBerry, Dell and Samsung. "We are very happy with our results" with the test run, he said. "Customers believe we are a good place to go for smart phones and mobile computing. It can really help us with sales. The whole wireless connectivity is becoming a big part of businesses." Retailers from Best Buy Co. to Wal-Mart Stores Inc. have expanded their mobile-phone businesses to capitalize on the growth in the category.
