Understanding which HD TV technologies support HD 1080p

In today’s TV market, since most old generation TVs such as the tube TVs have been discontinued, almost all TVs that are available support a digital signal. There are many types of HD TVs that are available with many different display designs and technologies being used to create these HDTV televisons.

With the standard Definition TVs, which have been discontinued, the TVs were able to display images in several screen resolutions, although the maximum resolution at the time was the 480i or interlaced definition. It was only when the first HD TVs came out that additional resolution capabilities and todays HD TVs are able to display up to 1080p HD resolution. Because there are different display technologies being used such as projection HD technologies including front and rear projection HD TVs, Plasma HD screens and the more common LCD and LED HD TVs.

All HD TVs today display their content on a fixed-pixel display, that includes all HD display technologies and screens regard less of their screen size. With the 2 standard HD resolutions, 720p and 1080p, this means that all the incoming content will either be up scaled or down scaled to fit the screen resolution either in 720p or 1080p.

There is also the 1080i resolution which many TV broadcasters are using because 1080i uses less bandwidth or digital signal to transmit into homes as compared to 1080p. Most 1080p content comes from stored and digital content. Some broadcasters do use the 720p format though.

Getting a larger screen size may increase your viewing range but the overall HD resolution benefits may only be realized when you use an HD content source. To maximize your viewing experience on either an 720p or 1080p, you will have to realize that the larger screen size of each HD TV will only be ideal when the right settings are used with it. The best viewing range on an LCD or LED TV will come from a close up range, this range is often about 1.5 times the diagonal screen size of the HD TV. With plasma and projection HD TVs, the viewing angle is increased to about 2.5 times.
